DENVER (KDVR) — After another year without making the playoffs, the Denver Broncos are looking to fill some positions with some new blood.
Among these changes for next season, Russell Wilson’s time with the Broncos is being questioned.
With the draft taking place in April, the Broncos hold the 12th overall pick, the first time they are expected to make a first-round pick since 2021. Positions needed include running back, wide receiver, defensive line , cornerback and quarterback.
Based on a recent interview with head coach Sean Payton, a new quarterback for the Denver Broncos isn’t inevitable, but it’s certainly not out of the question.
On Friday, Payton joined Kay Adams on the Up & Adams Show where the duo discussed Wilson’s time on the team.
Adams asked Payton the million dollar question: How does it end?
“It used to be in our league where there was no free agency, you had a draft, three rookies beat out three veterans and you took the same team into the regular season as before. Except it’s a lot different now,” Payton said.
Payton continued: “This idea of ’we’re going to pick up where we left off’ is nonsense, it’s not.”
As for how this will impact Wilson, that’s not entirely clear yet.
The 10 a.m. draft meetings for next season’s team began Monday, and Payton said he couldn’t yet name the rookie quarterbacks’ jersey numbers because he hasn’t seen them.
In meetings, the Broncos will wonder, “Are we going to be able to find him in the draft?” Are we going to find him in free agency? Or is it in the building? Payton said in the interview.
Decisions on Wilson will be made soon
The decision won’t take long. As for keeping Wilson on the team, a decision will be made as soon as possible, according to Payton.
Most likely, Denver will know within the next month.
The Broncos have five days, starting March 12, to officially decide whether or not they will keep Wilson.
The Broncos already have to pay Wilson’s $39 million salary for 2024, if he is on the roster beyond March 17, they will be responsible for his $37 million salary for the 2025 season.
For now, Payton says he’s still looking for the “perfect match” when it comes to the Broncos’ quarterback.
“I think it’s still not resolved for us,” Payton said in the interview.
