Lakewood packs council meeting about migrants

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (KDVR) – The Lakewood City Council responded Monday evening to residents’ concerns about the migrant situation in neighboring Denver.

A report from the city manager says Lakewood is not being asked for housing for newcomers, but rather is urging citizens to volunteer or donate to help alleviate the crisis.

City officials met with Denver officials last month, sparking rumors about Lakewood’s involvement in helping migrants.

Before Monday’s city council meeting, a group of individuals dressed in butterfly outfits gathered outside the street in a show of support for the migrant community. There was also a group of opponents, holding signs and expressing dissatisfaction with the possibility of migrants being housed in the city.

At some point, the Lakewood City Council will vote on whether to continue negotiations with Denver.
