It’s Official, The 2025 Golf GTI And Golf R Won’t Have Manuals

Volkswagen showed off a camouflaged 2025 Golf GTI at CES in Las Vegas last month, but the real reveal came weeks later in Europe. While the American model has yet to be shown, a thinly disguised prototype competed in the FAT Ice Race Aspen in Carbondale, Colorado. We asked VW of America about what the future holds for the ultimate hot hatchback.

Confirming our worst fears, the six-speed manual transmission is disappearing after the 2024 model year. In an email to Engine1Jerohn Anderson, Volkswagen of America product communications specialist, said: “I can inform you that the manual transmission will not be available after MY2024 for the Golf GTI and Golf R.”

Some reports suggest VW could change its mind due to more relaxed Euro 7 regulations, but the Euro-spec Golf GTI debuted with a DSG only. Therefore, its American cousin also loses the stick. The special edition GTI 380 marked the end of the road for the three-pedal Golf in the United States.

And it is not for nothing that the Euro 7 standard would impact the American version. U.S. sales of the Golf GTI with manual transmission were only about five percent of total volume in 2023. Given that the bulk of sales came from other markets, keeping the third pedal in North America was not worth it. just not worth it. Although Euro 7 legislation has been relaxed since the initial proposal, the change did not come soon enough to retain the manual. The Golf Mk8.5 had already been largely (if not entirely) developed.

Although the Golf R wasn’t offered with a manual transmission in Europe, Americans could row their own gears. However, the all-wheel drive flagship will also be sold strictly with the automatic transmission starting with the 2025 model year. This does not mean that the manual is completely dead in the Golf 8, however, since some markets offer cheaper versions with 1.5 TSI petrol engines and 2.0 TDI diesel engines combined with a clutch pedal.

The loss of the manual is going to be a big disappointment for enthusiasts interested in buying a GTI or R. Earlier this year, we asked VW how many people had acquired the three-pedal performance sedan in 2023. The acceptance rate for the GTI was 50 percent while the R was just behind, at 40 percent, the same as for the Jetta GLI.

Along the same lines, we also asked VoA if the 2025 Golf GTI would receive the power increase from the revised model sold on the Old Continent. Jerohn Anderson declined to confirm whether the US variant would get those extra 20 ponies, bringing the total to 261 hp.

VW has yet to reveal the revised Golf R. She had a camouflaged car during the ice race in the Austrian town of Zell am See in late January. The world premiere will take place this summer. VW has yet to mention whether Europe will receive another Golf R wagon. Spy photos indicate the long-roof model will continue.

It’s also unclear if the top of the range will get more power. The 2023 Golf R333 and the 20 Years Edition from a year before both had 328 hp in Europe. If VW wants to unlock this extra muscle for the regular Golf R, it would bring a power increase of 13 hp.

These will be the last updates to the GTI and R in the combustion engine era as VW replaces the eighth-generation Golf with a fully electric model. The hot versions bearing these famous suffixes will live in the electric age. VW has already filed a revised “GTI” logo with a lightning bolt replacing the last letter.
