Apple will launch its Vision Pro mixed reality glasses on Friday, marking the iPhone maker’s first foray into headsets equipped with augmented and virtual reality.
Unveiled last summer at the Worldwide Developers Conference, the highly anticipated headset will be available in stores and online starting February 2. The VR headset is Apple’s first major deployment since the launch of the Apple Watch several years ago. It also follows smart glasses recently launched by competitors such as Meta, Snapchat and Microsoft.
Apple has already sold around 200,000 units of the Vision Pro, with the device selling out earlier this week, MacRumours reported.
Here’s what you need to know about the Apple Vision Pro.
What is Apple Vision Pro and what does it do?
The Apple Vision Pro is a mixed reality headset that has some similarities to smart glasses from Meta, Snapchat and Microsoft that integrate digital content with real-world landscapes.
The device has so far received praise from media outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and various digital news publications, such as The Verge and CNET. The device’s “volumetric landscape” display gives users a surprisingly immersive experience compared to other VR-enabled devices, according to CNET.
More than 600 applications have been developed specifically for the headset, which offer new ways to browse the Internet, create notes and chat via SMS, the company’s website says. One notable feature allows users to extract a 3D element from an app and interact with it from different angles as if it were a tangible object placed in front of them, according to Apple.
Additionally, companies with pre-existing apps are rolling out special features using the new Apple device’s mixed reality technologies. Capitalizing on its successful film franchises, Disney’s streaming service, for example, will offer immersive viewing experiences on the headset, transporting users to one of four cinema-inspired virtual environments: the desert world of Star Wars , Monsters Inc. Scare Floor, Marvel’s Avengers. Tower and the Disney+ Theater, an immersive space inspired by Hollywood’s iconic El Capitan Theater, the company announced Friday in a statement. In addition, Vision Pro users will be able to view more than 40 popular 3D movies from the House of Mouse, including “Avatar: The Way of Water”, “Black Panther”, “Inside Out” and “The Lion King”, according to the Disney website.
How much does it cost?
By far the most expensive VR headset on the market, the Apple Vision Pro’s starting price is $3,499, Apple’s website says. For comparison, Meta’s Headquest 3 sells for $499.99, while Snapchat’s Spectacles 3 debuted for less than $400, according to the companies’ respective product pages.
When and where will Apple Vision Pro be available?
The Apple Vision Pro will be available for purchase in stores and online starting February 2, 2024. Pre-orders, which Apple began accepting on January 19, could arrive at buyers’ doors as early as Friday, according to the company.
